“Name one country that had been in such a poor state and was revived in two years” - Gharibashvili
Can you name one country that had been in such a poor state and was revived in two years? This is ruled out. This is an illusion, Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Gharibashvili said at the presentation of the "Promotion of Micro and Small Enterprises in Georgia".
The PM said the village was destroyed, impoverished and empty, while agriculture was devastated when they came to power.
“Our main achievement from the past two years was the Association Agreement with the EU and free trade, which will cultivate our new standards. A new reality is coming to our country. Two million people, nearly the half of our population in our country is poor. Former government officials and others come out today and ask why the state could not help these poor people in these two years. Can anyone, even a professor, name one country that had been in such a poor state and has revived in two years? This is ruled out. This is an illusion. But the efforts launched by us for development of agriculture are not real”, the PM said.
Irakli Gharibashvili thanked the Minister of Economy Giorgi Kvirikashvili and his team for their efforts and talked about the available resources in terms of agricultural development.
"The country was oriented on imports. We had been importing 85% and now we are importing relatively less, but we are importing agricultural products from neighboring countries. I'll give you a simple example: in the summer months our farmers’ peaches are purchased by
our neighboring countries. They store the peaches in refrigeration farms and bring them into Georgia five times more expensive in winter. This is a simple example of what was happening in our agriculture. There were many challenges and we started to work on these challenges. Yesterday we had a meeting of the Economic Council, where we summarized the resources of our country. It was actually revealed that in each region we have more resources then it is necessary for the local market. We can produce enough not only for the local market, but also for export. This is the starting point," said the Prime Minister.
A presentation of the "Promotion of Micro and Small Enterprises in Georgia" - a new component of the governmental program "Produce in Georgia" – took place in the exhibition center "Expo Georgia". Representatives of the government, diplomatic corps and international organizations attended the event.
